Zhou Zui said to Jin Tou: "You are causing Qin to wage war against the mighty Qi. If Qin prevails, it will subdue Qi and reward you, preventing Qi from ceding much territory while leaving the feudal lords to their mutual strife. If Qin fails, Qi will be gravely weakened and compelled to heed Qin. Qin will then strip Qi of its treasures, and certainly will not allow Qi to cede much land, but will say to the King of Qin: 'The land Qi cedes is less than that ceded by Wei, and Qi's resentment toward Qin is no deeper than Wei's.' The King of Qin will surely heed this. Thus you would be using Qi to ally with Qin while elevating Wei. Moreover, Wei values Qi precisely because Qi can unite with Qin. Now, if you use Qi to ally with Qin, you cause Wei to slight Qi. You would do better to have Qi honor Wei, and Wei will surely honor Qi in return. When Qi honors Wei, Wei will inevitably offer territory to Qi. This is your means of using Qi to elevate Wei while inducing Wei to yield land to Qi. If this comes to pass, then Qi will surely disdain Qin, and Wei will hold Qi in high regard. Once Qi disdains Qin, the world's worthy men will flock to Qi, and Qin will inevitably fall into distress. If you do not act thus, you will surely be ridiculed by all under heaven."

💡 商战启示录

The core of Zhou Zui's strategy lies in reshaping the dynamics of the game—eschewing direct confrontation in favor of forging interlocking interests that yield mutual gains for all parties. In the modern arena of commercial warfare, this mirrors the co-opetition between enterprises. Consider two tech titans, such as Apple and Samsung, who are both market rivals and supply-chain partners: direct conflict would leave both wounded, whereas collaboration—like Samsung supplying screens to Apple—can expand the market together while undercutting other competitors, such as Huawei. Zhou Zui advised the King of Qin not to directly provoke a Qin-Qi clash, but rather to elevate Qi's regard for Wei, prompting Wei to cede territory to Qi, thereby shifting the balance of power. This parallels a firm avoiding a price war with a rival, instead indirectly weakening it by bolstering a third party or forging alliances. Another illustration is Didi and Kuaidi, who, after a fierce subsidy war, chose to merge—conserving resources to jointly confront a mightier adversary like Uber. Zhou Zui's wisdom resides in deft mediation that redistributes interests among all stakeholders, positioning oneself advantageously. Modern managers should learn to discern the multi-party interest landscape, transcend zero-sum thinking, and creatively devise collaborative schemes that achieve maximum strategic gain at minimal cost.
