Someone spoke to Jin Tou on behalf of Zhou Zui, saying: "Qin sent Zhou Zui to Qi, and all the feudal lords turned their gaze westward, because of Qin's might. Now that Zhou Zui has returned from Qi, if Qin does not come to his aid, then Zhou Zui will be ridiculed by the world. You would do better to stop Zhou Zui from going, causing Qin to suspect that Zhou Zui is grateful to you, while in truth he is grateful to Qin. If Zhou Zui is grateful to you, he will surely serve Qin on your behalf; and if Qin gains Zhou Zui, it will also be grateful to you. In this way, Zhou Zui will not lose his standing in Qi, Qin will not suspect Zhou Zui, and you will have secured the friendship of both Qi and Qin."

💡 商战启示录

The core of this strategy lies in leveraging information asymmetry and the dynamics of competing interests to create dual value for the intermediary. In modern commerce, figures akin to Zhou Zui serve as pivotal partners or channel distributors, while Jin Tou acts as a platform or coordinator. The essence of the tactic is this: rather than directly acceding to one party's demands, one elevates one's own standing by cultivating "competitive loyalty," thereby placing both sides in one's debt. For instance, in business negotiations, when two major clients each seek exclusive access to your resources, you may refrain from taking an explicit stance, instead intimating to each that you face pressure from the other, thus prompting both to offer more favorable terms. This mirrors Apple's early maneuvering among chip suppliers, pitting TSMC against Samsung to secure superior pricing and technological support. Yet this strategy must be wielded with prudence and measured restraint, lest it be perceived as duplicitous. The key to success lies in ensuring that all parties regard you as their ally, ultimately fostering a multi-party win-win outcome rather than a zero-sum game. Jin Tou's ultimate objective is to earn the trust of both Qi and Qin—just as an enterprise sustains relationships with core clients while expanding into new markets, reaping rewards along two fronts.
