Inland Point Surcharge

Inland Point Surcharge is a common additional fee in international freight. It refers to the charge collected by a carrier (such as a shipping line, airline, or freight forwarder) when the cargo destination is an inland location beyond a port or airport, to cover the extra transportation cost of moving the cargo from the port/airport to the inland point. It is commonly seen in sea FCL/LCL, air freight, and international express, especially when the delivery place designated by the consignee is not a base port or major airport. Notes: This fee is usually not included in the ocean freight or main air freight and must be confirmed separately; different carriers vary greatly in their definition of inland points and charging standards, so the shipper should clarify before booking whether this fee will apply to avoid unexpected charges at the destination port. Unlike a Port Surcharge, which targets specific port congestion or handling costs, the Inland Point Surcharge targets the extended transport from the port to the inland point; unlike proportionally floating fees such as the Bunker Adjustment Factor, it is usually a fixed amount or charged by weight/volume. Foreign trade practitioners should distinguish base freight from surcharges when quoting and specify the party bearing the cost in the contract.
