King Wei of Wei asked Zhang Yi, "I wish to draw close to Qin, yet I fear Qin holds me in disfavor—what am I to do?" Zhang Yi replied, "Let Your Majesty not be troubled. Permit me to prepare a hundred chariots and go forth to meet with the sovereigns of Han and Wei, persuading them both to offer their territories to Qin. Thus Qin will harbor no suspicion against you. Even if Your Majesty wished to keep aloof from Qin, could you still do so? Moreover, of all the states Qin most desires to weaken, none surpasses Chu. Now, if Your Majesty will heed my counsel—sealing the borders and severing the covenant with Qi—I shall entreat the King of Qin to present the six hundred li of Shangyu territory, letting Qin move to cripple Chu. Then surely Qin will bear no ill will toward Your Majesty. Should Your Majesty renege on this accord, Qin will come to attack you, and even if you wished to reclaim Shangyu, it would be beyond reach. As matters stand, once you have broken with Qi and Qin comes demanding land, Your Majesty will inevitably violate your pledge to Qin—this would be to summon the joint armies of Qi and Qin against you. Let me therefore devise a plan for Your Majesty: rather than this, forge peace with Qin through my mediation, while secretly renewing friendship with Qi. Chu would then not dare to march against Wei. With Wei preserved, and the bonds among Qin, Qi, and Chu all made secure, what cause for anxiety would remain to Your Majesty?" King Wei said, "Well spoken." And thus he followed Zhang Yi's counsel.

💡 商战启示录

The essence of Zhang Yi's strategy lies in "leveraging circumstances to break the deadlock, and placing bets on both sides"—a principle of profound relevance to modern commercial warfare. When the King of Wei faced overwhelming pressure from the powerful state of Qin, Zhang Yi did not counsel direct resistance. Instead, he employed the feint of "ceding territory to sue for peace" to placate Qin, while secretly forging an alliance with Qi, thereby creating a multi-front balance of power. This teaches enterprises that when squeezed by industry giants, they should not engage in head-on confrontation, but rather deftly employ "strategic buffering" and "multilateral cooperation." For instance, when Huawei faced U.S. sanctions, it did not meet force with force. Instead, it developed its own HarmonyOS, deepened partnerships with enterprises in Southeast Asia and Europe, and cultivated a diversified market—all while keeping a window open for negotiation with the United States, achieving a posture of "fighting while talking." Similarly, small and medium-sized enterprises collaborating with platform giants may outwardly comply with the rules (such as paying commissions), yet covertly develop private domain traffic or cross-platform channels to avoid over-reliance on a single avenue—much as Zhang Yi "secretly aligned with Qi." The crux is this: in the presence of a formidable adversary, maintain an outward semblance of compliance to lower hostility, while simultaneously laying out alternative strategies to safeguard one's core interests. This approach demands that leaders possess the "Zhang Yi-style" strategic acumen of vertical and horizontal maneuvering—able to manage multiple threads of relations simultaneously, striking a balance between concession and resolve, and ultimately achieving victory without a single battle.
