The King of Wei wished to unite the feudal lords in a vertical alliance against Qin, for he regarded Qin as the greatest calamity. Someone said to the King of Wei: "Your Majesty desires a vertical alliance—permit me to illustrate with the example of Qin. Qin is a state of tigers and wolves, harboring ambitions to swallow the entire realm. Qin is the enemy of all under heaven. Those who advocate the vertical alliance all urge ceding territory to Qin to curry its favor—this is like carrying firewood to quench a blaze; until the wood is consumed, the fire will not die. Now Your Majesty seeks a vertical alliance, yet this is no means to secure the peace of Wei. It would be better for Your Majesty to turn instead toward befriending Qin. Qin will surely be grateful to Your Majesty, and Wei shall attain tranquility. Moreover, those who champion the vertical alliance all declare Qin a menace, yet Qin has not deployed its troops against Wei, while the advocates themselves first fall into mutual suspicion—this is like two tigers locked in combat, and one must surely be wounded. Your Majesty would do better to befriend Qin; with friendship toward Qin, Wei shall be at peace, and all under heaven will stand in awe of Wei." The King of Wei said, "Well spoken." Thereupon he abandoned the plan of the vertical alliance.

💡 商战启示录

This historical episode illuminates a core proposition in business strategy: whether to join an industry alliance against formidable competitors. King Wei initially contemplated vertical alliance—akin to small and medium enterprises uniting against giants such as Alibaba or Tencent—yet the persuader discerned the crux: alliances breed internal suspicion, and confrontational maneuvers may invite calamity upon oneself. Far better to cooperate directly with the strong and reap tangible benefits. In modern commerce, many enterprises blindly enlist in price-war coalitions or technical standard alliances, only to founder on internal discord—witness the early mobile operating system alliances against iOS, which disintegrated as each member pursued private gain. Conversely, some firms choose to align with giants: Pinduoduo, in its infancy, integrated into WeChat's ecosystem, leveraging Tencent's traffic to rise swiftly, avoiding head-on conflict while securing developmental resources. The persuader's counsel reminds entrepreneurs that strategic decisions should rest on self-interest and risk assessment, not emotional confrontation. When the adversary is powerful yet poses no direct threat, cooperation or coexistence may surpass alliance-driven opposition. Moreover, one must heed the alliance's "carrying firewood to quench a blaze" effect—expending resources for the sake of combat proves inferior to focusing on one's own core competitiveness. True wisdom lies in discerning the times and choosing the path most conducive to survival and growth, rather than being held hostage by alliance slogans.
