Water Tightness

Water Tightness is a common technical term in foreign trade, referring to the ability of a product or material to prevent water penetration under specific water pressure conditions. It is often used in packaging, building materials, electronic products, outdoor equipment, etc. In international trade, water tightness is often written into contracts or letters of credit as a quality indicator, especially for sea freight packaging, such as containers and wooden boxes, which need to be watertight to prevent rainwater intrusion. Usage scenarios include: product specifications, quality inspection reports, pre-shipment inspection. Note: Water tightness is not equivalent to air tightness or water resistance. Air tightness targets gases, water resistance may only prevent splashes, while water tightness requires completely preventing water penetration, usually tested by standards such as IPX7/IPX8. It differs from water repellency in that the latter only repels water but does not necessarily completely seal. Foreign trade practitioners need to clarify test standards (e.g., ISO 20653, IEC 60529) and stipulate test methods and acceptance levels in contracts to avoid disputes caused by differences in standards.
