Statement of Claim

A Statement of Claim is a core document in the foreign trade claims process, referring to a written request submitted by the beneficiary (buyer or seller) to the breaching party or responsible party (such as the carrier or insurance company), formally listing the loss items and amounts. Its main use scenarios include: shortage of goods, quality non-conformity, delayed delivery, loss or damage during transport, etc. Notes: 1) Supporting documents (such as inspection reports, bills of lading, invoices) must be attached; 2) It should be submitted within the claim period stipulated in the contract or letter of credit, otherwise it may become invalid; 3) The amount calculation must be based on evidence and avoid exaggeration. Difference from a 'Claim Letter': a Statement of Claim focuses more on listing the loss details item by item, while a Claim Letter focuses on expressing the intention to claim and the overall demand; Difference from an 'Inspection Report': an Inspection Report is a document proving the facts of the loss, while a Statement of Claim is the monetary claim made on that basis. In practice, a Statement of Claim is often used as an attachment to a Claim Letter, and the two are used together.
