It usually occurs in cases such as exceeding the free return period, returning the container at a different location, or container damage or contamination. Usage scenarios include: delayed container return after import customs clearance, failure to return the empty container in time after export cut-off, and the shipping line requiring return to a specific depot. Notes: Free periods vary by shipping line (usually 7-14 days), and overdue returns may be charged per day; the container condition should be confirmed before return to avoid extra repair fees; return at a different location is more expensive and should be confirmed with the shipping line in advance. Difference from Demurrage: Demurrage refers to the container overstaying within the terminal, while the Container Return Fee emphasizes the charge incurred at the return stage; it is also different from re-stowage fees and container washing fees. Foreign trade practitioners should specify in the contract the responsible party for container return and the bearing of costs to avoid extra expenses.
