In today's lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces on mental health. A recent study conducted in Melbourne followed 1,000 adults over five years. Participants who lived within 300 meters of a park or garden reported 22% lower levels of stress and anxiety. Interestingly, the effect was stronger for those who visited these spaces at least once a week, regardless of the size of the green area. However, the study noted that passive viewing, such as seeing trees from a window, had minimal benefit. The researchers suggest that active engagement, like walking or gardening, is key to improving psychological well-being.
