📖 白话文翻译

The state of Qin attacked Zhao, and the King of Zhao once again appointed Zhao Kuo as general. Zhao Kuo's mother said, "Zhao Kuo only knows how to read the military texts left by his father; he does not understand how to adapt to changing circumstances." The King of Zhao paid no heed and sent him forth to lead the army nonetheless. In the end, Zhao Kuo was defeated in battle, and four hundred thousand soldiers surrendered to Qin, only to be buried alive by the Qin forces.

💡 商战启示录

Zhao Kuo's defeat lay in "armchair strategy"—possessing theory alone while lacking practical adaptability. In modern business, many managers place blind faith in prestigious MBA programs or consulting reports, applying models mechanically while ignoring market dynamics—much like Zhao Kuo rigidly following his military manuals. A classic case is Nokia, the former mobile phone giant, which clung to the theoretical superiority of its Symbian system while overlooking the practical upheaval of Apple's touchscreen revolution, ultimately being eliminated by the market. Conversely, Huawei's Ren Zhengfei emphasizes "letting those who hear the cannon fire make decisions"—prioritizing frontline feedback over headquarters' theoretical deliberations, thereby navigating sanctions and competition with agility. This strategy offers a twofold lesson: enterprises should evaluate personnel on their capacity for adaptive change rather than credentials or seniority alone; and strategic formulation should integrate real-time data with on-site experience, establishing rapid trial-and-error mechanisms. Zhao Kuo's mother's foresight also reminds leaders to heed dissenting voices and avoid arbitrary decision-making. In the VUCA era, success belongs to "living generals" who adjust tactics in real time—not to "copy machines" who cling doggedly to doctrine.
