📖 白话文翻译

When Wangsun Jia was fifteen, he served King Min of Qi. Later, when King Min fled into exile, Wangsun Jia knew not where his sovereign had gone. His mother said, "When you go out in the morning and return late, I lean against the gate, watching for you; when you go out in the evening and have not yet come back, I lean against the door of the lane, awaiting you. Now you serve your lord; the lord has fled, yet you know not where he is—what, then, do you return for?" Thereupon Wangsun Jia went into the marketplace and cried aloud, "Nao Chi has thrown the state of Qi into chaos and slain King Min. Let those who are willing to follow me in punishing him bare their right arms!" Four hundred men in the marketplace followed him. Wangsun Jia led them against Nao Chi and at last struck him down.

💡 商战启示录

Wang Sunjia, at merely fifteen, was able to rise to the occasion in a time of crisis—the key lay in his mother's use of "returning home" as a metaphor to awaken in him a sense of duty and belonging. In the realm of commerce, an employee's loyalty to an enterprise often stems from identifying it as "home." A leader must, like that mother, make each member feel expected and needed, so that they may be driven to take initiative in times of peril. Wang Sunjia did not act blindly; he first clarified his objective—identifying Nao Chi as the chief culprit—then issued a public call, using the simple and unmistakable signal of "baring the right arm" to swiftly forge consensus. This mirrors modern corporate crisis management: when a brand faces reputational damage or sudden market upheaval, the leader must step forward without delay, employing concise and forceful slogans or action plans—such as Steve Jobs's return to Apple with "Think Different" to reinvent the brand, or Huawei's "Nanniwan Plan" to bolster morale amid sanctions—to rapidly rally both internal and external forces. Wang Sunjia's appeal was no empty rhetoric; it was grounded in a keen insight into the psychology of the populace, who harbored deep resentment toward Nao Chi. Likewise, modern enterprises must precisely grasp customer pain points and employee sentiments, winning support through concrete actions—abolishing unjust fees, issuing public apologies, improving products—rather than vague promises. In the end, he led four hundred men to accomplish the assassination, proving that even a small team can move mountains. In business, one need not await perfect timing or vast resources; with clear objectives and effective mobilization, a small team can achieve a stunning reversal through focused breakthroughs—much as a startup can disrupt industry giants with innovative technology. The essence of this strategy lies herein: in crisis, a sense of belonging ignites loyalty; clear signals coalesce action; and a small organization can accomplish great deeds.
