Renewal

Renewal in foreign trade typically refers to the act of applying to extend the validity period of documents with a set term, such as existing contracts, letters of credit, insurance policies, quotas, licenses, or long-term agreements, before the original term expires. Common scenarios include: extending a letter of credit after expiry (extending the shipment date and validity period), renewing export credit insurance, renewing import/export licenses, and renewing agency agreements or long-term supply contracts. Points to note: renewal must be applied for before expiry and must obtain the consent of the other party or the relevant authority; if a letter of credit is involved, it is necessary to clarify cost bearing, the new expiry date, and whether other terms are amended; renewal and 'extension' are often used interchangeably, but extension mostly refers to the extension of a specific period under a letter of credit, while renewal focuses more on the continuation of the overall validity period; unlike 're-signing' (renewal can also mean signing again), renewal usually does not change the core terms. In practice, written notice should be given in advance to avoid cargo detention, refusal of payment, or breach of contract due to expiry.
