MT799 (Free Format Message)

MT799 is a free-format message under the SWIFT (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication) standard message types, with the full name 'Free Format Message'. It does not have predefined fixed fields and allows banks to exchange information in free text. It is commonly used in foreign trade and bank guarantee or letter of credit (L/C) business for notifications, confirmations, amendment requests, or clarifications. Typical scenarios include: notifying an L/C amendment, confirming guarantee terms, inquiring about message status, and transmitting non-standard instructions. When using MT799, note the following: the content must be clear and accurate to avoid ambiguity; it cannot replace legally binding formal messages (such as MT700 or MT760); banks may charge additional fees; and the receiving bank is not obligated to automatically execute the instructions in it, which require manual processing. MT799 is easily confused with other message types: MT799 is used for free-format communication, while MT700 is used to issue an L/C, MT760 is used for guarantees/standby L/Cs, and MT707 is used for L/C amendments. Therefore, MT799 is often used as an auxiliary communication tool rather than a formal business document.
