Oil Resistance

Oil resistance refers to the ability of materials (such as rubber, plastics, coatings, seals, etc.) to resist the erosion, swelling, deformation, or performance degradation caused by oil-based media (such as engine oil, fuel oil, hydraulic oil, vegetable oil, etc.). In foreign trade, this term is commonly found in the specification descriptions of rubber products, seals, pipes, cable sheaths, industrial gloves, etc. Usage scenarios include: when customers inquire and require oil resistance test data (such as ASTM D471, ISO 1817), quality clauses in contracts, and product manuals. Precautions: Different oils (mineral oil, synthetic oil, vegetable oil) have greatly different effects on materials, so the test oil type, temperature, and immersion time must be specified; oil resistance does not mean resistance to all oils, and it is different from chemical resistance and solvent resistance—the latter target acids, bases, solvents, etc. In addition, oil resistance is often mentioned together with temperature resistance and pressure resistance, requiring comprehensive evaluation. Foreign trade practitioners should require suppliers to provide third-party test reports and specify test standards and acceptance indicators in contracts to avoid returns or claims due to failure to meet oil resistance standards.
