Sale by Standard

Sale by Standard refers to a transaction method in which the buyer and seller agree in the contract to use a public standard (such as ISO, ASTM, GB, EN, etc.) as the basis for the quality of the goods. The seller only needs to ensure that the goods comply with that standard, without providing specific samples or detailed specifications. It is suitable for bulk commodities (such as steel, chemicals, agricultural products) or products that are difficult to describe in a standardized way. Usage scenarios: when goods have international or industry-wide common standards, contract terms can be simplified and quality disputes reduced. Precautions: the standard name, version number, and year (e.g., ASTM A36-2020) must be clearly specified to avoid ambiguity caused by version updates; at the same time, the inspection institution, inspection method, and handling of nonconformity should be agreed upon. Difference from sale by sample: sale by standard does not rely on physical samples, and quality judgment is more objective; difference from sale by specification: sale by specification requires listing specific indicators, while sale by standard refers to an existing standard document. Difference from sale by trademark: sale by standard does not involve brands and only focuses on technical indicators.
