LNG Carrier

An LNG carrier is a specialized vessel designed to transport liquefied natural gas (LNG), serving as a critical transportation tool in international energy trade. LNG carriers liquefy natural gas by cooling it to approximately -162°C, reducing its volume by about 600 times, thereby greatly improving transportation efficiency. Its use scenarios mainly involve natural gas import and export trade, such as transporting LNG from exporting countries like Australia, Qatar, and the United States to importing countries such as China, Japan, and South Korea. Precautions include: LNG carriers are extremely expensive to build and require advanced cargo containment systems and reliquefaction units; charter contracts typically take the form of long-term time charters or voyage charters; trade terms must clearly specify loading and discharging ports, laydays, demurrage, boil-off rate, etc. The difference from ordinary oil tankers or LPG carriers is that LNG carriers have extremely high requirements for safety, cryogenic materials, and boil-off gas handling, and only a few shipyards worldwide can build them. Foreign trade practitioners need to pay attention to risks such as international sanctions, insurance, and canal transit restrictions.
