Devanning / Stripping

Devanning (also called Stripping) refers to the process of unloading cargo from a container and unpacking it, usually at the destination port or inland container yard (CY/CFS). Use cases include: picking up goods after import customs clearance, LCL cargo distribution, unloading before container return, etc. Precautions: 1) Before devanning, confirm the container seal is intact and there are no abnormalities, and take photos as evidence; 2) During devanning, check the number of packages and packaging condition inside the container. If cargo damage or shortage is found, immediately raise an objection to the carrier/insurance company; 3) After devanning, the empty container must be returned promptly to avoid demurrage/detention charges. Opposite to 'Vanning/Stuffing', devanning is the reverse logistics operation. It is often used interchangeably with 'unstuffing', but unstuffing emphasizes inspection or partial unloading; unlike 'unloading', devanning specifically means unloading from a container, not from a bulk vessel or truck. Devanning efficiency affects subsequent distribution and warehousing costs, and is a key node in the import process of foreign trade.
