Free Time (Detention)

Free Time (Detention) is a key term in foreign trade and logistics, referring to the period during which the carrier allows the consignee to use the container free of charge, usually starting from the time the container is discharged from the vessel until it is returned to the designated location. It mainly applies to import operations and differs from 'Free Time (Demurrage)', which refers to the free storage time of the container at the terminal yard. Free Time (Detention) focuses on the use of the container after it leaves the terminal, while Free Time (Demurrage) focuses on its stay within the terminal. Usage scenarios include: the consignee needs to arrange trucking, devanning, and container return; if the free time is exceeded, a Detention Charge will be incurred. Notes: The length of free time varies by shipping line, port, and contract, typically 7-14 days; it is necessary to confirm the start time (e.g., discharge date or container release date) and the return location; different container types (dry, reefer) may have different free time. The difference from Free Time (Demurrage) is that demurrage applies to terminal storage, while detention applies to container usage. Foreign trade practitioners should plan logistics reasonably to avoid extra costs.
