Extended Warranty

Extended Warranty refers to a paid service provided by the seller or a third-party service provider in foreign trade transactions, which extends the warranty period after the original manufacturer's warranty (usually 1 year) expires. It is commonly used in the export of durable consumer goods such as electronics, machinery, and home appliances. The buyer may purchase an extended warranty before the original warranty expires to cover subsequent repair or replacement costs. Precautions include: the coverage of the extended warranty may differ from the original manufacturer's warranty (e.g., whether labor costs and shipping fees are included), the responsible party must be clearly identified (seller, manufacturer, or third-party insurance company), and regulatory differences regarding extended warranties across countries should be noted (e.g., the EU requires clear disclosure of consumer rights). The difference from 'Manufacturer's Warranty' is that the latter is usually free and provided with the product, while an extended warranty is a paid contract. Compared with 'After-sales Service,' an extended warranty is a specific commitment to extend the term, rather than a general reference to all after-sales support. In foreign trade contracts, the start and end dates, coverage area, claims process, and cost bearing of the extended warranty should be clearly stipulated to avoid disputes arising from cross-border repairs.
