Policy Number

A Policy Number is a unique identification number assigned by an insurance company to each insurance contract after underwriting. In foreign trade, it usually refers to the number of a cargo transportation insurance policy. It is an important credential for the policyholder, insured, or beneficiary when claiming, inquiring, or endorsing a policy with the insurance company, and is also one of the key elements for banks to review document consistency under settlement methods such as letters of credit, documentary collections, and telegraphic transfers. Usage scenarios include: after the exporter insures the goods, they obtain the policy number and fill it into commercial invoices, packing lists, customs declarations, and documents required by the letter of credit; the importer uses the policy number to verify the insurance certificate; in the event of cargo damage, the policy number is used to report and claim. Precautions: The policy number must be exactly the same as the number on the original policy, insurance certificate, or other insurance documents, and must comply with the terms of the letter of credit; otherwise, it may constitute a discrepancy and lead to refusal of payment. Different insurance companies have different numbering rules, and it must not be fabricated. If the letter of credit requires submission of an insurance policy, ensure the policy number is clearly visible. Difference from other terms: The policy number is the unique identifier of the insurance contract, different from the invoice number (commercial invoice number), bill of lading number (transport document number), or customs declaration number (customs declaration number). Each corresponds to a different document system and must not be confused.
