Reference Number

A Reference Number is a unique identifier used in foreign trade to identify a transaction, document, or communication. It is commonly found in contracts, invoices, bills of lading, letters of credit, and correspondence. It is generated by agreement between one or both parties to facilitate quick retrieval, verification, and filing. Usage scenarios include: as a linking number between the issuing bank and the advising bank in a letter of credit; as an inter-bank business number in collections; as a subject identifier in emails or faxes. Note: The reference number must be unique to avoid confusion with order numbers, invoice numbers, etc.; different institutions may use different reference numbers for the same transaction, so the correspondence must be clearly stated in the documents. Difference from Order No.: An order number specifically refers to the buyer's purchase order number, while a reference number is broader and can refer to any number used for tracking. Difference from Contract No.: A contract number is the identifier of a formal contract, while a reference number may be used only for internal or temporary tracking. Therefore, foreign trade practitioners should clearly mark the reference number on documents and ensure all parties have a consistent understanding.
