Supervision of Discharging

Supervision of Discharging is an important term in foreign trade transportation and port operations. It refers to the full-process supervision, recording, and inspection of the cargo unloading process at the port of discharge by an independent third party or a representative of the buyer/seller, to ensure that the quantity, packaging, and condition of the goods comply with the bill of lading or contract requirements. It is commonly used in the import of bulk cargo, dangerous goods, high-value equipment, or fragile goods. Buyers often entrust inspection agencies such as SGS or BV to carry out supervision of discharging as a basis for claims or settlement. Notes: The supervision report must clearly state the unloading time, cargo damage, shortage ratio, etc., and must be signed and confirmed by the captain or chief officer; if abnormalities are found, relevant parties should be notified promptly and photographic evidence retained. In contrast to 'Supervision of Loading', supervision of discharging focuses on risk allocation at the destination port; unlike 'Inspection', it emphasizes process supervision rather than final quality determination. Foreign trade practitioners should specify in the contract the party bearing the supervision costs, inspection standards, and the validity of the report to avoid disputes.
