Freight Forwarder

Freight forwarder refers to an industry that, entrusted by consignees or shippers of import and export goods, handles international cargo transportation and related business in the name of the principal or its own name and charges service fees. Its core role is to integrate transportation resources and provide one-stop services such as booking, customs declaration, inspection declaration, insurance, warehousing, and inland transportation. It is widely used, especially in sea freight, air freight, and multimodal transport, where the freight forwarder acts as an intermediary connecting cargo owners and carriers. Note: A freight forwarder is not an actual carrier and generally does not assume carrier liability for loss or damage during transportation unless it issues a bill of lading as a carrier; it is necessary to distinguish between a House B/L issued by the freight forwarder and a Master B/L issued by the shipping company, which differ in cargo release procedures and risk bearing. Difference from customs brokers and logistics companies: customs brokers only handle customs declaration, logistics companies may focus on domestic transportation, while freight forwarders cover the entire international transportation chain.
