Dimensional Deviation

Dimensional Deviation refers to the allowable range of difference between the actual dimensions of a product and the dimensions specified in the contract, drawings, or standards. It is a common term in foreign trade quality clauses. Usage scenarios include: trade of industrial products such as mechanical parts, hardware tools, textiles, and plastic products. Buyers usually specify an acceptable upper deviation limit in orders (e.g., ±0.5mm); exceeding this limit is considered non-conforming. Notes: 1) Deviation differs from tolerance: tolerance is the allowable range given by design, while deviation is the algebraic difference between the actual measurement result and the basic dimension; 2) The contract should clearly specify the deviation standard (e.g., ISO, GB, ASTM) and measurement method to avoid disputes; 3) For sampling inspection, AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) should be agreed upon; 4) Distinguish from 'Size Discrepancy': the latter means complete non-compliance with specifications and may constitute a fundamental breach of contract. Foreign trade practitioners need to detail deviation clauses in the PI or contract and retain inspection reports as the basis for claims.
