PSE Certification (Japanese Electrical Safety)

PSE certification is a mandatory certification system stipulated by Japan's Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Act, with the full name Product Safety Electrical Appliance & Material. This certification targets electrical products sold in the Japanese market and is divided into two categories: Specified Electrical Appliances (Diamond PSE) and Non-Specified Electrical Appliances (Circle PSE). Specified Electrical Appliances include 116 types of products such as wires, plugs, and transformers, and must be certified by a registered conformity assessment body in Japan; Non-Specified Electrical Appliances include 341 types of products such as home appliances and lighting fixtures, and can be self-declared. Usage scenario: Electronic and electrical products exported to Japan must obtain PSE certification and bear the corresponding mark, otherwise they cannot clear customs or be sold. Notes: Diamond PSE requires factory inspection, and the certificate is valid for 3-5 years; Circle PSE can be self-declared but test records must be kept. Difference from other terms: PSE is unique to Japan, different from EU CE and US UL, but test standards often refer to IEC. Foreign trade practitioners need to confirm the product category, choose a compliant certification body, ensure the mark is correct, and pay attention to METI filing requirements.
