IK Rating (Impact Protection)

IK Rating is a standard established by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for the degree of protection provided by enclosures against mechanical impacts, officially known as IEC 62262. It quantifies the ability of electrical equipment enclosures to resist external mechanical impacts. The ratings range from IK00 (no protection) to IK10 (20 joules); the higher the number, the greater the impact resistance. Usage scenarios: Commonly found in foreign trade in specification sheets, procurement contracts, and quality inspection clauses for products such as LED luminaires, outdoor distribution boxes, industrial control cabinets, and security cameras. Notes: IK rating differs from IP rating (dust and water protection)—the former addresses mechanical impacts, while the latter addresses ingress of solids/liquids; they are often marked together and must not be confused. Additionally, IK rating tests must be conducted under specific conditions (e.g., hammer impact energy, number of blows), and different standards (e.g., IEC vs. EN) may vary slightly. Before quoting, confirm the customer's required test standard and certification body. Compared with generic terms like 'impact resistance rating,' IK rating is a standardized, verifiable quantitative indicator that avoids verbal promises.
