ETD (Estimated Time of Departure)

Estimated Time of Departure (ETD) is the expected date on which a vessel will leave the port, provided by the shipping line or freight forwarder to the shipper in international trade. It is used to arrange cargo consolidation, customs clearance, and subsequent transportation plans. It typically appears in the Booking Confirmation (S/O), Shipping Instruction, or Shipping Advice. Usage scenarios include: the seller preparing goods, the buyer arranging the shipment period under a letter of credit, and the freight forwarder coordinating trucking and customs clearance. Note: ETD is an estimate and may change due to weather, port congestion, or schedule adjustments, so it should not be the sole basis for the contractual shipment period; the actual date of loading is based on the On Board Date on the bill of lading. Difference from ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival): ETD focuses on departure, ETA focuses on arrival; difference from ATD (Actual Time of Departure): ETD is planned, ATD is actual. Foreign trade practitioners should closely monitor ETD updates and promptly notify the buyer to avoid letter of credit discrepancies or demurrage charges.
