Settlement Number

A Settlement Number is a unique reference number used in foreign trade to identify a claim case or the claim settlement process. It is typically generated by insurance companies, claim agents, or buyers and sellers when disputes such as cargo damage, cargo shortage, short weight, or quality discrepancy occur. Usage scenarios include: the claim case number obtained after reporting to an insurance company, an internal settlement number used by exporters and importers during claim negotiations, and the claim report number issued by third-party inspection agencies. Notes: The settlement number should be linked with the contract number, invoice number, bill of lading number, etc., for traceability; different institutions may use different prefixes or formats, so it should be clearly indicated in correspondence; the settlement number itself does not constitute a payment commitment and serves only as a basis for case tracking. Unlike a 'contract number,' which applies to the entire transaction, a settlement number applies only to a claim event; unlike an 'invoice number,' which is used for settling payment for goods, a settlement number is used for settling compensation. Proper use of the settlement number can improve communication efficiency and avoid claim delays caused by information confusion.
