Today, in our environmental science lecture, we'll discuss the impact of urban green spaces on city temperatures. A recent study in Melbourne found that parks can reduce surrounding air temperature by up to 4 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. However, this cooling effect depends on the size of the green area and the type of vegetation. For instance, large trees with broad leaves provide more shade and evaporative cooling than grass lawns. Interestingly, the study also showed that the effect diminishes beyond 100 meters from the park boundary. Therefore, city planners should prioritize creating interconnected green corridors rather than isolated pockets.
