Today we're going to discuss the importance of sleep for memory consolidation. Recent studies show that during deep sleep, the brain replays and strengthens neural connections formed during the day. Interestingly, researchers at a German university found that students who napped for 45 minutes after studying performed significantly better on a recall test than those who stayed awake. However, the timing of the nap mattered: naps taken within two hours of learning were most effective. Also, the quality of sleep is more crucial than quantity, especially for older adults.
