Open Top Container

An Open Top Container is a specially designed container that does not have a rigid roof; instead, it is covered with a removable waterproof tarpaulin and equipped with movable top rails. This design facilitates loading over-height, over-weight, or irregularly shaped cargo from the top, such as large machinery, steel, timber, and glass. Usage scenarios: When cargo height exceeds the standard container door height and cannot be loaded through the side doors, it can be lifted in from the top. Precautions: Freight rates for open top containers are usually higher than for standard containers, and attention must be paid to cargo securing and waterproofing; out-of-gauge cargo may incur additional charges. Difference from standard containers: Standard containers have a closed top and can only be loaded/unloaded from one end or the side; open top containers provide top loading access. Difference from flat rack containers: Flat rack containers have no top or side walls and are suitable for over-width and over-height cargo; open top containers have side walls and are suitable for cargo that is slightly over-height but of normal width. In foreign trade, it is necessary to explicitly apply for an open top container when booking and confirm whether the shipping line provides one.
