Dunnage Bag

A Dunnage Bag is an inflatable packaging material used to secure and cushion cargo inside containers, trucks, or railway cars. It is typically made of multi-layer kraft paper or high-strength plastic. Once inflated, it fills the voids between cargo to prevent damage from shifting or impact during transportation. Use cases include: less-than-full container loads (LCL), multi-batch consolidated shipments, and transport of heavy machinery or precision instruments. Precautions: select the appropriate size and inflation pressure based on cargo weight and void size to avoid over-inflation and bursting; add protective padding when the bag contacts sharp-edged cargo; some countries or shipping lines have environmental requirements for dunnage bag materials. Distinction from other terms: A Dunnage Bag emphasizes providing cushioning and support after inflation, whereas ordinary 'Void Fill' such as bubble wrap or foam blocks does not have an inflatable structure; compared with 'Lashing', dunnage bags focus on surface support rather than point fixation. In foreign trade contracts, it should be clearly specified who provides the dunnage bags, who bears the cost, and who is liable for damage.
