Waybill Number

A Waybill Number is a unique identification number on a transport document issued by a carrier (such as a courier company, airline, or shipping company), used to track cargo transportation status, query logistics information, and handle related business. It is commonly found on Air Waybills (AWB), Sea Waybills, and courier labels. Usage scenarios include: customers checking cargo location, providing transport evidence during customs declaration, claiming compensation from carriers, or modifying shipping information. Notes: A waybill number is not a document of title (especially air waybills are non-negotiable), and its format varies by carrier (e.g., courier waybills are often 12 digits, air waybills are 11 digits with the first 3 digits being the airline code). Difference from Bill of Lading Number: A bill of lading is a document of title, negotiable, mainly used in ocean shipping; a waybill number only serves as a transport contract and cargo receipt, is non-negotiable, and for Sea Waybills, no original document is required for cargo release. Foreign trade practitioners need to accurately record waybill numbers for efficient communication with customers, freight forwarders, and carriers.
