Booking Agent

A Booking Agent is a service provider entrusted by a cargo owner or freight forwarder to specifically book space with carriers such as shipping lines or airlines. Its core responsibility is to apply for and confirm space with the carrier based on cargo information, vessel schedule/flight, destination, etc., while coordinating subsequent procedures like bills of lading, container loading, and customs declaration. It is commonly used when the cargo owner does not directly contract with the shipping line but seeks advantageous rates and space guarantees through a booking agent. Note: A booking agent typically does not own transport vehicles; its legal status is that of an agent, not a carrier. Therefore, the cargo owner must clarify the scope of its responsibilities (e.g., whether it bears space guarantee liability). Also, distinguish a booking agent from a freight forwarder—the latter offers more comprehensive logistics services, while a booking agent focuses more on space booking. Additionally, a booking agent may be unable to guarantee all booking requests due to tight space during peak seasons; the cargo owner should communicate in advance and sign a written agreement to clarify rights and responsibilities.
