Space Release

Space Release is a term in international freight forwarding and shipping line operations. It refers to the shipping line or carrier confirming acceptance of a booking and formally allocating space to the freight forwarder or shipper, allowing them to arrange loading, customs declaration, and container gate-in. It typically occurs after booking confirmation and before the documentation cut-off; the forwarder uses the Space Release notice (S/O) to pick up containers and arrange trucking. Note: Space Release does not mean the cargo is on board; it only indicates space reservation. If the shipper fails to load on time or cancels, dead freight may apply. After Space Release, pay attention to customs and port cut-off times to avoid delays. Unlike 'Booking' (applying for space), Space Release is the confirmation of allocation; unlike 'Loading' (loading on board), Space Release is a necessary step before loading. Foreign trade practitioners should ensure Space Release information matches the bill of lading and customs declaration, and follow up with the carrier to prevent being rolled due to overbooking or port omissions.
