Laytime

Laytime is a core term in voyage charter parties, referring to the agreed time allowed for the charterer to carry out cargo loading and discharging operations at the loading and discharging ports. It is usually expressed in days, hours, or specific dates, and serves as the basis for calculating demurrage and despatch. It is mainly used in the charter transportation of bulk commodities (such as coal, grain, and ore), where the shipowner and charterer must specify in the contract the conditions for commencement, interruption, and termination of laytime. Key points to note include: laytime usually commences a certain period after the Notice of Readiness (NOR) is tendered and may be interrupted by excepted risks such as weather or strikes; if actual loading/discharging exceeds the agreed time, the charterer must pay demurrage, and if it is shorter, the charterer may earn despatch. Unlike 'loading/discharging rate,' laytime directly specifies the total duration, whereas the rate specifies the quantity loaded/discharged per unit of time; unlike 'demurrage,' which is a penalty for exceeding the time, laytime is the time itself. A correct understanding of laytime helps avoid contractual disputes and control logistics costs.
