Functional Test

Functional Test is an important clause in foreign trade contracts for product performance verification. It refers to the inspection by the buyer or a third-party institution, before or after delivery, of whether the product has all the functions stipulated in the contract. It is commonly used in transactions of complex goods such as machinery, electronic products, and software. Use cases include: Pre-shipment Inspection, Commissioning after arrival, and performance assessment during the warranty period. Notes: test standards (e.g., ISO, IEC), test environment, test tools, responsible party, and handling of nonconformity must be specified; if the test fails, it may trigger rework, claims, or return. The difference from Quality Inspection is that functional testing focuses on the product's dynamic operating capability, while quality inspection pays more attention to static indicators such as appearance, dimensions, and materials. The difference from Performance Test is that functional testing verifies 'whether a function can be achieved,' while performance testing measures 'how well it is achieved' (e.g., speed, precision). Foreign trade practitioners should refine functional test clauses in contracts to avoid disputes caused by vague standards.
