Middle Rate

Middle Rate is the arithmetic average of the Bid Rate and the Ask Rate in the foreign exchange market, i.e., (Bid Rate + Ask Rate) / 2. It is not an actual transaction exchange rate but a reference indicator, commonly used in foreign trade contract pricing, financial bookkeeping, tariff calculation, and internal accounting. Usage scenarios include: 1) Contracts stipulating settlement at the middle rate to avoid disputes over the bid-ask spread; 2) Enterprises using the middle rate to convert foreign currency income during bookkeeping; 3) Customs using the middle rate as the basis for dutiable value when levying taxes. Precautions: The middle rate does not reflect actual transaction costs. If not specified in the contract, banks may settle at the ask rate or bid rate, resulting in exchange losses. The difference from the bid rate and ask rate is: the bid rate is the price at which banks buy foreign exchange (customers sell foreign exchange), the ask rate is the price at which banks sell foreign exchange (customers buy foreign exchange), and the middle rate is for reference only. It differs from the central bank's middle rate, which is the official benchmark exchange rate published to guide the market. Foreign trade practitioners should clearly specify the contract exchange rate type to avoid disputes arising from ambiguous terminology.
