ETD (Estimated Time of Departure)

Estimated Time of Departure (ETD) is a core term in foreign trade and international logistics, referring to the expected date and time when the carrier (shipping company, airline, etc.) plans for the cargo to depart from the port of origin based on the current schedule. It typically appears in booking confirmations, bills of lading, shipping notices, and logistics tracking information, and is used to coordinate operations among buyers, sellers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and warehouses. When using ETD, note that it is an estimated time and may change due to weather, port congestion, schedule adjustments, etc., so in actual business you should monitor the latest updates from the carrier; it corresponds to ETA (Estimated Time of Arrival), with ETD focusing on departure and ETA focusing on arrival; it differs from ATD (Actual Time of Departure), which is the actual departure time used for final settlement and document confirmation. In addition, ETD is usually closely related to the cut-off time for customs declaration and the port cut-off time; if the cargo does not complete customs declaration and enter the port before the cut-off, it may miss the original ETD. In letter of credit transactions, ETD is often linked to the latest shipment date; if the ETD is later than the date stipulated in the L/C, it may result in a discrepancy. Therefore, foreign trade practitioners should regularly verify the ETD and allow buffer time to cope with changes.
