Total Sum Insured

Total Sum Insured is a core term in foreign trade cargo transportation insurance, referring to the maximum compensation limit declared by the insured to the insurance company for the subject matter insured, i.e., the upper limit of the insurer's liability. It is usually determined as the invoice value plus a certain percentage (e.g., 110%), with the added portion covering freight, insurance premium, and expected profit. Usage scenarios: Under CIF or CIP trade terms, the seller is responsible for insurance and must specify the Total Sum Insured in the policy; when the buyer arranges insurance, they should also check whether this amount is sufficient. Notes: The Total Sum Insured should not be lower than the actual value of the goods, otherwise it may constitute underinsurance and claims will be paid proportionally; at the same time, overinsurance should be avoided to prevent increased premium costs. It is often used interchangeably with 'Insured Amount', but strictly speaking, Total Sum Insured emphasizes the overall limit, while Insured Amount may refer to a single or itemized amount. It differs from 'Insured Value', which is the actual value of the subject matter, whereas Total Sum Insured is the contractual compensation ceiling. In addition, in letter of credit settlements, the Total Sum Insured must comply with the L/C requirements, otherwise payment may be refused.
