📖 Reading Passage

The concept of 'cognitive load' refers to the total amount of mental effort being used in the working memory. In educational contexts, instructional design aims to manage this load to facilitate learning. According to Sweller's cognitive load theory, there are three types: intrinsic, extraneous, and germane. Intrinsic load is inherent to the complexity of the material, while extraneous load is caused by poorly designed instruction that does not aid learning. Germane load, however, is the effort devoted to processing and understanding the material, which is beneficial. Research suggests that reducing extraneous load can free up cognitive resources for germane load, thereby enhancing learning outcomes. This theory has significant implications for multimedia learning, where the presentation of information should be optimized to avoid overwhelming the learner.
