Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing the impact of urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding more parks and trees can reduce local temperatures by up to 4 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. This is because vegetation provides shade and releases moisture through transpiration. However, the study also noted that the effect is strongest within 200 meters of the green area, and that smaller, scattered parks are more effective than one large central park for cooling the whole city. So, city planners should prioritize distributing small green pockets across neighborhoods.
