Today in our environmental science lecture, we're discussing urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne compared two parks: one with native trees and another with imported species. The research found that the native park attracted 30% more bird species, but the imported park had higher visitor numbers. Interestingly, the native park required 40% less water, yet maintenance costs were similar due to the need for specialist pruning. The study concluded that while native plants support biodiversity, urban planners should consider both ecological and social benefits when designing parks.
