Good morning, everyone. Today, in our environmental science lecture, we will discuss the impact of urban green spaces on city temperatures. A recent study in Melbourne found that parks can reduce surrounding temperatures by up to 4 degrees Celsius during heatwaves. Interestingly, the cooling effect extends about 100 meters beyond the park boundary. However, the effectiveness depends on factors like tree canopy density and water features. For example, areas with dense trees and ponds showed a stronger cooling effect than areas with only grass. The study also noted that nighttime cooling was more significant than daytime cooling, which is crucial for reducing heat stress during summer nights.
