Today we're discussing the impact of urban green spaces. A recent study in Melbourne found that adding more trees to city streets can reduce summer temperatures by up to 2 degrees Celsius, but only if the trees are planted close to buildings. However, the same study noted that parks with grass alone have a smaller cooling effect. Interestingly, the researchers also discovered that green roofs on high-rise buildings are most effective for energy savings in winter, not summer. So, for maximum benefit, cities should prioritize street trees near residential areas rather than large distant parks.
