Today we're going to discuss the impact of urbanization on local wildlife. Take the example of the peregrine falcon. These birds originally nested on high cliffs, but in cities they've adapted to skyscrapers and bridges. Interestingly, their urban population now exceeds their rural one. However, city life poses challenges. Young falcons often collide with glass windows, and their diet consists mainly of pigeons, which carry diseases. To help, some cities install nesting boxes on tall buildings. Yet, a key factor for their success is the availability of tall structures, not food, since they hunt efficiently in open spaces. In fact, researchers found that falcon pairs in cities produce more chicks than those in rural areas, mainly due to fewer natural predators.
