Today we're discussing the impact of urban green spaces on mental health. A recent study in Melbourne followed 500 adults over five years. Participants who lived within 300 meters of a park or garden reported significantly lower stress levels and better mood. Interestingly, the size of the green space mattered less than its accessibility. Even small community gardens had a positive effect, especially for older residents. However, the study noted that simply having a balcony with plants did not produce the same benefits. The researchers suggest that actual ground-level access encourages more frequent visits and social interaction, which are key to the psychological gains.
