Now, many people believe that the bicycle was invented in the 19th century, but actually, the first two-wheeled vehicle, called a 'velocipede', appeared in France in the 1790s. However, it had no pedals; riders pushed their feet along the ground. It wasn't until 1860s that pedals were added to the front wheel. Interestingly, the modern chain-driven bicycle, similar to what we ride today, was developed in England in the 1880s. This design made cycling much more efficient and comfortable.
