20GP (20' General Purpose Container)

The 20GP (20' General Purpose Container) is one of the most commonly used standard containers in international ocean shipping. Its internal dimensions are approximately 5.9m × 2.35m × 2.39m, with a capacity of about 33 cubic meters and a maximum payload of about 28 tons, though in practice, cargo weight is usually kept within 25 tons. It is suitable for transporting general dry cargo, such as clothing, electronic products, mechanical parts, and general merchandise. Its use scenarios include Full Container Load (FCL) and Less than Container Load (LCL) shipping, where FCL is charged per container and LCL is charged by volume or weight. Precautions: The 20GP has limited capacity and payload; if overweight, one must apply for an overweight container or switch to a 40-foot container; different shipping lines have different weight limits, which need to be confirmed in advance; compared with the 40GP, the 20GP has a higher freight rate per unit volume but is suitable for small-volume cargo; compared with the 40HQ, the 20GP has a lower height and cannot accommodate over-height cargo. In foreign trade quotations, "20GP" is often used as the pricing unit, such as "USD 2000 per 20GP."
