Packaging Cost

Packaging Cost refers to all expenses incurred in packaging export goods in foreign trade, including material costs (cartons, wooden cases, pallets, fillers, labels, etc.), labor costs, design fees, and surcharges arising from packaging compliance (such as fumigation and certification). Under trade terms (e.g., FOB, CIF), packaging cost is usually included in the price of goods, but if the buyer requests special packaging (e.g., custom color boxes, eco-friendly materials), an additional charge may apply. It is commonly used in quotations, cost accounting, contract clauses, and letter of credit requirements. Notes: clarify packaging standards (e.g., export wooden cases require IPPC fumigation), the party bearing the cost (the seller bears ordinary packaging by default; special packaging can be negotiated), and whether it is included in the dutiable value. Unlike 'packaging fee,' packaging cost focuses more on the total cost composition, while packaging fee often refers to a separately listed charge. It differs from 'transport packaging cost,' which refers only to protective packaging for transport and excludes sales packaging. Foreign trade practitioners should accurately calculate packaging cost to avoid profit loss due to underestimation, and specify packaging requirements and cost responsibility in the contract.
